By Gelyne Cayetano
Introducing myself, I am 26 years old female, Gelyne Cayetano. I am a single mother, full-time student, and love fitness. Today I’m going to share my weight loss journey. I will talk about all my struggles and progress.
My first struggle – being overweight.
It started on September 28, 2014. I was 24 years old at that time. After having two kids, I reached my heaviest weight to about 178-180lbs. Before I even had kids, I was already overweight. I was already at 150lbs. Second pregnancy came, and I gave birth to another baby boy with a C-section.
On the night of September 28, 2014, I was having pains in my abdomen. It was aching, and I couldn’t pass urine. I was rushed to emergency, stayed there overnight and had ultrasounds done. They found two gallstone polyps in my gallbladder. I was scared. I wanted the pain to go away. The Doctor told me I was too young to undergo surgery and also too young to be having gallbladder pains. I asked him what can I do to make it better because I didn’t want it to get worse. The first thing he told me is to stay healthy and loose weight. I cried, and I said, “Oh my gosh that is impossible for me doctor”. He left me with, “well it’s hard, but our health is important.”
I discharged from the hospital. I headed home, and so many things were going through my head. “How am I going to this?” I don’t want to go back to the hospital. I don’t want surgery, and I want to live longer for my kids.
First thing I did when I went home, I opened up my laptop and searched:
“diet on gallstones.”
“how do I lose weight.”
“foods to keep you healthy.”
I read so much information. I wrote everything I read. Now my next step was how to put what I’ve learned into action.
October 1, 2014, I stepped on the scale, weighed 178lbs. I cried and looked at myself in the mirror and said okay do this for your kids and you. I set a goal to loose 3 lbs.
The hardest thing for me was diet? Food was my enemy. Growing up in a Filipino home we all know how delicious the food is. My mom would always cook adobo every week. Sinigang was my all time favorite dish. I gave up all of that and gave up eating white rice also. I loved fast-food burgers – McDonalds, KFC. Every time I would drive by a fast-food place, I would just stare at the road and not move my head, so I don’t get tempted to buy.
I changed my diet to raw- vegetables, chicken and fish. Had more fruits for snacks instead of cake or chips. Not many of us love vegetables. I couldn’t stand eating vegetables. I found it boring to eat, no taste at all. But at that time I was focused and was motivated to stay healthy. I drank juice every morning and evening, drank only water and avoided soda. I cooked my meal plans and didn’t touch any of the food at home. Eating healthy is number one to get results.
